Hollister Ranch Coastal Access Program
In November, the Hollister Ranch Coastal Access Program hosted two in-person workshops and one virtual workshop. We know not everyone was able to join and know some may still have additional ideas or perspectives they’d like to share. This page provides an avenue to continue collecting feedback through December 19.
Scroll down to access the post-workshop survey and bonus exercises. These will guide you through the same information and access program options presented during the workshops, giving you an opportunity to share your feedback on each proposed approach. Before starting the survey and bonus activities, please watch the 14-minute video for helpful background information.

Share Your Feedback Here
There are three activities available below. Below is a brief description of each tab to help you navigate:
- Post-Workshop Survey: This is the main survey, and we ask that you prioritize it. It presents each access program option shared during the workshops and provides space for open feedback at the end.
- Public Beach Access Constraints Prioritization Exercise: A bonus activity that provides a simulated budget and asks you to prioritize access by beach. Each beach has different constraints and resource sensitivities.
- Access Methods Prioritization Exercise: Another bonus activity that also provides a simulated budget and asks you to select the access program options that make the most sense. Each option has different costs and timelines.
Post Workshop Survey
The post-workshop survey below presents the six access program options present during the workshops. Each option includes a different mix of access methods and beaches, showing a range of possible approaches that consider resource protection, safety, feasibility, and public access.
Participants can comment on each option, noting what makes sense, what doesn’t, and any considerations that may be missing. The options are not the only possible approaches; the final proposed access program may combine elements from multiple options based on the input collected.
An open-comment section is included at the end of the survey for any additional thoughts that weren’t captured under individual options.
Public Beach Access Constraints Exercise
Welcome, Access Program Planner! You’ve been tasked with leading one of California’s most anticipated coastal access programs. Six beaches are available for public access, each offering unique recreational opportunities—from world-class surfing to marine education.
However, opening some beaches is more costly than others due to challenging road access, sensitive habitats, and infrastructure needs.
Your Budget: 20 points
Each beach provides information across the following three categories:
Pros
- ⛱️ Recreational Opportunities - range of supported beach activities
Cons
- 🚧Beach Access Constraints - physical or logistical barriers limiting public beach access
- 🌿 Resource Sensitivity - level of vulnerable biological and cultural resources requiring protection from visitor impacts
Your Task: Decide which beaches to prioritize within your budget, balancing costs with access opportunities and environmental sensitivities.
Access Methods Exercise
Welcome back, Access Program Planner! You've selected which beaches to open—now comes the bigger question: How will people actually get there?
Six access methods are being considered, each with different implementation costs, operational expenses, and timelines.
Your Resource Budget: 18 Points
Each access method requires resources in three categories:
- đź’˛ Implementation Costs - Upfront infrastructure investment
- đź’˛ Operational Costs - Ongoing expenses to run the program
- ⏳ Timeframe - How long it takes to implement
Your Task: With limited resources, you’ll need to make strategic choices. Some methods require fewer points, while others need significant investment. Select the access methods you feel should move forward—the choices you make will shape the future of this program.
